Fort Christiansted is located in downtown Christiansted at the end of “Kings Alley”.  This fort dates back to 1730 with completion in 1749.

St. Croix is believed to have been originally inhabited by South American Tribes that arrived via canoes.   Christopher Columbus arrived in 1493.  European  slave traders arrived setting up plantations and exporting slaves.  Seven different European countries laid claim to St. Croix.  Eventually, through much strife, Denmark became dominant.  In 1847 Denmark granted partial freedom to the slaves.  In 1848 Governor General Peter vo Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the slaves.

Looking toward the harbor from Fort Christiansted is a  small island with its own beach/resort.  A ferry runs constantly between Fort Christiansted and the Island.

The bricks used for construction of downtown Christiansted were imported from Denmark.  St. Croix exported sugar and other local commodities to Denmark.  The empty ships would use the Danish bricks for ballast for the return trip to St. Croix.
